In an exciting new chapter for Maroma, a Belmond Hotel, the iconic Riviera Maya retreat proudly announces the appointment of Renata Portes as its new General Manager, effective 24 November 2025. Known for its serene setting, soulful luxury, and deep connection to Mexican culture, Maroma continues to elevate its guest experience—and Renata’s arrival marks a powerful step forward.

A Leader Shaped by Two Decades of Luxury Hospitality

Renata Portes brings with her more than 20 years of outstanding experience in the global luxury hospitality industry, much of it deeply rooted in the Belmond family. Her journey began at the legendary Copacabana Palace in Rio de Janeiro, where she joined as a trainee and quickly grew through key roles in Spa, Guest Relations, and Events. Her early years were marked by a strong emphasis on thoughtful service and operational excellence, qualities that continue to define her leadership today.

Her career later expanded internationally with enriching experience in the Maldives, before returning to Copacabana Palace as Rooms Division Manager and eventually Assistant Manager, Rooms. By 2023, Renata’s commitment and talent led her to Hotel das Cataratas—another crown jewel in Belmond’s portfolio—where she first served as Hotel Manager and was promoted to General Manager in 2024.

A Track Record of Transformational Success

During her leadership at Hotel das Cataratas, Renata guided the property through one of its most celebrated eras, overseeing several remarkable achievements:

  • Launch of the acclaimed Y Restaurant, now a guest favourite

  • Continued recognition as the only Forbes 5-Star hotel in South America

  • Placement on the prestigious extended World’s 50 Best list

  • Achievement of Three Michelin Keys

  • Inclusion on the exclusive Forbes Edge list

Beyond the accolades, Renata is admired for her authentic commitment to responsible tourism and community impact. She strengthened the hotel’s support for “Onças do Iguaçu,” a conservation initiative dedicated to protecting jaguars in Brazil’s Atlantic Forest—an effort that beautifully aligns with Belmond’s long-standing dedication to sustainability.

Bringing Slow Luxury to New Heights in Riviera Maya

As General Manager of Maroma, Renata steps into a role poised for creativity, innovation, and cultural connection. She will oversee strategic leadership and daily operations, further enhancing the hotel’s reputation as one of Riviera Maya’s most soulful luxury escapes. Her work will continue to reflect Belmond’s signature philosophy of Slow Luxury—a mindful approach that encourages guests to immerse themselves deeply in the nature, traditions, and spirit of Mexico’s Caribbean coastline.

Renata will report directly to Tiago Sarmento, Area Managing Director, Mexico, as she leads Maroma into an inspiring new era defined by warmth, excellence, and purposeful travel.
