Meghalaya’s tourism story is entering an exciting new chapter—one that blends premium hospitality with inclusive regional growth. In a landmark move, the Department of Tourism, Government of Meghalaya, has officially handed over land for the upcoming Holiday Inn Resort, Tura, marking the sixth five-star hospitality project in the state’s development pipeline.

This milestone not only signals the arrival of global-standard luxury in the Garo Hills, but also reflects Meghalaya’s larger vision of sustainable tourism, economic expansion, and balanced regional development.

A First-of-Its-Kind Five-Star Resort in Garo Hills

The upcoming Holiday Inn Resort will be developed under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model and managed by InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG). With an investment of ₹130 crore, the project will redevelop the existing Polo Orchid property into a full-fledged five-star resort—the first ever in Tura and the entire Garo Hills region.

This development is expected to significantly strengthen high-value tourism infrastructure, attracting discerning domestic and international travellers who seek comfort without compromising on nature and culture.

From Zero to Six: Meghalaya’s Premium Hospitality Journey

As recently as 2020, Meghalaya did not have a single five-star hotel. Fast forward to today, and the state already boasts two operational luxury properties—Courtyard by Marriott, Shillong and Vivanta by Taj—with several more in progress.

The Holiday Inn Resort, Tura now joins an impressive list of upcoming premium projects, including:

  • Aurika by Lemon Tree Hotels

  • Holiday Inn Resort, Sohra

  • Taj Umiam Resort and Spa

Together, these developments are redefining Meghalaya’s image from a niche hill destination to a high-end tourism hub in Northeast India.

Tourism as Infrastructure: The Vision Behind the Project

Speaking at the land handover ceremony, Conrad K. Sangma, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Meghalaya, emphasised that hospitality projects are not standalone ventures—they are part of a much larger economic ecosystem.

Under the ambitious Mission 10, Meghalaya aims to build a $10 billion economy, a goal the state is rapidly approaching. The Chief Minister also outlined a long-term vision of transforming Meghalaya into a $150 billion economy by 2047, with tourism playing a central role.

“This is not just a five-star hotel. It is the foundation of future growth for Tura, Garo Hills, and the state as a whole.”

Unlocking Garo Hills’ Eco-Tourism Potential

Long celebrated for its lush green landscapes, deep river gorges, waterfalls, and rich indigenous heritage, Garo Hills has often remained off the mainstream tourism radar. The new Holiday Inn Resort is expected to change that.

According to Timothy Shira, tourism is one of Meghalaya’s strongest economic drivers. With continued support like the Chief Minister’s Meghalaya Homestay Mission, which offers 70% subsidy, the region will see both luxury resorts and local homestays thrive side by side—ensuring inclusive growth.

Employment, Investment, and Local Growth

Beyond tourism, the project is set to generate direct and indirect employment opportunities for the people of Tura. Representatives from IHG reaffirmed their commitment to partnering with the state in driving economic development, skill creation, and community upliftment.

From transport and handicrafts to food supply chains and cultural experiences, the ripple effect of a five-star resort in Garo Hills is expected to unlock new investment avenues across multiple sectors.

A New Spotlight on Meghalaya’s Hidden Gem

The Holiday Inn Resort in Tura is more than a luxury address—it is a statement of intent. It places Garo Hills firmly on the national and international tourism map, inviting travellers to explore a region where untouched nature meets world-class hospitality.

As Meghalaya continues to balance sustainability with development, this project stands as a shining example of how thoughtful tourism can transform destinations—without diluting their soul.

Garo Hills is ready. Meghalaya is rising. And luxury tourism has found a new home in the clouds.
