A Global Hospitality Leader Joins Mandarin Oriental, Macau

Originally from Rheine, Germany, Kai Jansen brings a dynamic and multicultural perspective to the luxury hospitality industry. Known for his open-minded leadership style and strong dedication to operational excellence, Jansen has built a reputation for fostering motivated teams and creating memorable guest experiences.

His journey in hospitality began early, when he completed a traditional restaurant apprenticeship in his hometown. This hands-on experience laid the foundation for a career dedicated to the art of service.

Jansen later expanded his knowledge by earning a Bachelor of Business Administration from Stenden University in the Netherlands and Rangsit University in Thailand, equipping him with strong business and international hospitality management skills.

Building a Strong Career in Luxury Hotels

Before joining the Mandarin Oriental Group, Jansen gained valuable experience working in luxury hotels in Shanghai, China, and Berlin, Germany. These early roles allowed him to develop a deep understanding of international hospitality standards and diverse guest expectations.

In 2014, he joined Mandarin Oriental, Tokyo, where he steadily advanced through leadership roles within the hotel’s food and beverage department. His commitment to excellence and ability to lead high-performing teams quickly set him apart within the organization.

Leadership Role in Southeast Asia

Jansen’s career took a significant step forward in 2018 when he moved to Southeast Asia to become Director of Food and Beverage at Mandarin Oriental, Kuala Lumpur, the brand’s largest hotel.

In this role, he managed the entire food and beverage operation, overseeing multiple restaurants, bars, and banquet services. He also led a team of 350 colleagues, successfully guiding them through the challenges of the global pandemic while maintaining high levels of team engagement and operational performance.

His leadership during this difficult period demonstrated resilience, adaptability, and a strong commitment to both employees and guests.

Achievements in Europe’s Luxury Hospitality Scene

Prior to his new role in Macau, Jansen served as Hotel Manager at Mandarin Oriental, Munich, where he played an important role in strengthening the hotel’s reputation for luxury service.

He later joined the pre-opening team of Mandarin Oriental, Savoy Zurich, helping position the hotel as one of Europe’s most celebrated luxury properties. Under his leadership, the hotel achieved significant recognition, including:

  • Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star Award 2026

During his time in Switzerland, Jansen further enhanced his expertise by earning a Master’s degree in Hospitality from the Glion Institute of Higher Education and ESSEC Business School in France.

A New Chapter in Macau

As General Manager of Mandarin Oriental, Macau, Kai Jansen will focus on strengthening the hotel’s reputation for exceptional service, innovation, and world-class hospitality. His international experience and leadership background position him perfectly to guide the hotel into its next phase of growth.

Fluent in German, English, and Dutch, Jansen is also passionate about sports—particularly badminton, which he discovered while living in Malaysia.

He will relocate to Macau with his wife and three children, and the family is excited to experience the city’s vibrant culture, rich heritage, and world-famous culinary scene.
