Hospitality Tip of The Day — Leadership Series
Hospitality Tip of The Day — Leadership Series
Spokesperson: Nikhil Sharma, Managing Director & COO, South Asia, Radisson Hotel Group
In conversation with Divya, CEO, Hospitality Tip of The Day
1. What leadership principles have been most instrumental in your success within the hospitality industry?
Nikhil Sharma: Hospitality has always been a people-first business. Three principles have guided my leadership journey: authenticity, empowerment, and adaptability. Authentic leadership helps build trust with teams and stakeholders, empowerment creates a culture where people feel ownership and accountability, and adaptability ensures that we remain resilient in an ever-evolving environment. The hospitality industry is dynamic, and success comes from staying connected to both your people and your guests while remaining agile enough to embrace change.
2. How do you see the hospitality landscape evolving across South Asia over the next five years?
Nikhil Sharma: South Asia is poised for a transformative phase of growth. We are witnessing rising disposable incomes, stronger infrastructure development, increasing air connectivity, and a growing appetite for travel across both leisure and business segments. Over the next five years, I expect significant expansion in Tier II and Tier III destinations, continued growth in domestic tourism, and increasing demand for experiential, wellness, and sustainable travel. Travelers will seek more personalized and meaningful experiences, and hospitality brands that can cater to these evolving expectations will be best positioned for success.
3. What are the key factors that differentiate a successful hotel brand in today’s competitive market?
Nikhil Sharma: A successful hotel brand today is defined by its ability to consistently deliver trust, relevance, and memorable experiences. Guests have more choices than ever before, so differentiation comes from understanding their needs and delivering personalized experiences while maintaining high service standards. Strong brand values, a robust loyalty ecosystem, digital innovation, and a commitment to sustainability are increasingly important. Equally critical is the ability to remain locally relevant while offering globally consistent standards.
4. How do you balance operational excellence with delivering exceptional guest experiences?
Nikhil Sharma: Operational excellence and guest experience are deeply interconnected. Strong operational foundations enable teams to focus on creating meaningful guest interactions. We invest significantly in processes, training, and technology to ensure efficiency, but we never lose sight of the human element. Hospitality is ultimately about making people feel valued. The right balance comes from empowering teams with the tools and autonomy they need to deliver seamless service while creating genuine moments of connection with guests.
5. What role does technology play in shaping the future of hospitality?
Nikhil Sharma: Technology is becoming a key enabler of both operational efficiency and enhanced guest experiences. From AI-powered personalization and digital guest journeys to data-driven decision-making, technology allows us to better understand and serve our guests. At the same time, it helps streamline operations, optimize resources, and improve productivity. However, technology should complement, not replace, the human touch. The future of hospitality lies in blending digital innovation with authentic service to create experiences that are both seamless and memorable.
6. How do you inspire and empower teams across multiple properties and regions?
Nikhil Sharma: The foundation of empowerment is trust. I believe in creating an environment where individuals feel valued, heard, and encouraged to contribute ideas. Clear communication, shared goals, and recognition of achievements are essential. In an organization operating across multiple markets and cultures, it is important to foster a strong sense of purpose while allowing teams the flexibility to respond to local needs. Investing in learning, development, and career progression also plays a critical role in keeping teams engaged and motivated.
7. What emerging trends do you believe will have the greatest impact on the hospitality sector?
Nikhil Sharma: Several trends are reshaping the industry. Wellness tourism continues to gain momentum as travelers increasingly prioritize physical and mental well-being. Sustainable travel is becoming a mainstream expectation rather than a niche preference. Experiential travel, where guests seek authentic local connections, is also growing rapidly. Additionally, technology-driven personalization and the rise of blended travel—where business and leisure intersect—will continue to influence how hotels design experiences and engage with guests.
8. Can you share a memorable professional achievement or experience that has shaped your leadership journey?
Nikhil Sharma: One of the most defining experiences in my career has been leading businesses through periods of transformation and growth across different markets, cultures, and economic environments. While expanding portfolios, opening hotels, and delivering business results are important milestones, what has shaped me most is building teams and seeing people grow into leaders. Some of my proudest moments have been watching individuals I have worked with take on larger responsibilities, lead businesses successfully, and surpass what they thought was possible. Those experiences reinforced my belief that leadership is not about personal success; it is about creating opportunities for others to succeed and building organizations that can thrive long after you move on.
9. If you could describe your leadership style in three words, what would they be and why?
Nikhil Sharma: Empowering. Decisive. Authentic.
I believe in empowering people by giving them trust, responsibility, and the freedom to make decisions. Leadership also requires decisiveness, particularly when navigating uncertainty or complex business challenges. Above all, I value authenticity. People respond best to leaders who are genuine, transparent, and consistent in both their actions and communication. These three principles have helped me build strong teams, foster accountability, and create lasting relationships throughout my career.
10. What advice would you offer to the next generation of hospitality professionals?
Nikhil Sharma: Stay curious, stay adaptable, and never underestimate the power of relationships. Hospitality is a people business, and while technical skills are important, success is often determined by your ability to connect with others, build trust, and create meaningful experiences. Embrace continuous learning, seek diverse experiences, and be open to change. Most importantly, focus on creating value for guests, colleagues, owners, and communities alike. Titles and positions may change over time, but integrity, humility, and a genuine passion for service will always remain the foundation of great hospitality.
