In a move that strengthens its growing footprint in Africa, Jumeirah, a global leader in luxury hospitality and part of Dubai Holding, has appointed Xander Labuschagne as the General Manager of Hospitality for Jumeirah Thanda Safari in South Africa.
With over two decades of diverse experience spanning luxury safari lodges, boutique hotels, residences, and humanitarian work across South Africa, Botswana, UAE, and Europe, Xander brings a wealth of expertise in guest experience, operations, and sustainable hospitality. Prior to this role, he successfully led Atzaro Cape Town – Boutique Hotel and contributed to Atzaro Okavango Camp in Botswana, overseeing everything from procurement to commercial performance.
Jumeirah’s entry into Africa in December 2024 with Jumeirah Thanda Safari in South Africa and Jumeirah Thanda Island in Tanzania marked a major milestone for the brand. Partnering with the Thanda Group, Jumeirah set out to create meaningful travel experiences rooted in culture, conservation, and connection.
Nestled in the 16,500-hectare wilderness of KwaZulu-Natal, Jumeirah Thanda Safari offers guests encounters with the Big Five and authentic cultural experiences reflecting Zulu heritage.
The reserve is home to:
The Royal Thanda Club Estate – a 386-hectare private enclave with exclusive residences.
Villa iZulu – a luxurious villa set amidst the wild beauty of the game reserve.
Immersive Experiences – Game drives, bush walks, starlit dining, and even junior ranger courses for young adventurers.
With 90% of the staff hailing from local communities, guests enjoy not just luxury, but also meaningful connections with the region’s culture and people.
Jumeirah Thanda Safari goes beyond hospitality—it is deeply committed to conservation through:
Project Rhino KZN and WWF Black Rhino Range Expansion for rhino protection.
Cheetah breeding programs and landscape rehabilitation projects.
Community initiatives via The Thanda Foundation Trust, including Star for Life, empowering over 500,000 youth across South Africa and Tanzania.
Travelers can access the reserve from King Shaka International Airport in Durban with transfers by road or via a one-hour helicopter ride directly into the heart of the reserve.
Under Xander’s leadership, Jumeirah Thanda Safari is set to offer distinctive and purposeful guest experiences, blending luxury hospitality with sustainability, culture, and adventure.
As Jumeirah continues its growth journey across Africa, this appointment signals a commitment to world-class service while preserving the region’s wildlife and heritage.
