Bengaluru recently hosted the launch of The World Is Carried Within – Eighteen Essays on the Natural World and the Working Life, the latest book by hospitality leader and wildlife photographer Manoj Mathew V M FIIHM. The book was unveiled at a special gathering at the Verandah Boutique Lounge at Tamara Leisure Experiences Headquarters on September 3, 2026.

The launch brought together personalities from hospitality, leadership, architecture and academia, offering an opportunity to explore the ideas and experiences that shaped Mathew’s latest literary work.

A Book That Begins With Nature

The World Is Carried Within is the first volume of The Third Eye Series and brings together 18 essays that look at nature, human behaviour, organisations, leadership and the inner dimensions of working life.

What makes the book distinctive is the way each essay begins—not with a management theory or a leadership principle, but with an original wildlife photograph captured by Mathew.

His photographs take readers into the forests of Coorg and Nagarahole, the pilgrimage coast of Gokarna and the shores of Bentota in Sri Lanka. Encounters with creatures including the Coorg snail, potter wasp, Oriental Magpie-Robin, Black Kite, Stork-billed Kingfisher and Indian Pond Heron become starting points for broader reflections on how people think, behave, work and lead.

Rather than forcing leadership lessons onto the natural world, Mathew takes a more observational approach. Nature becomes a lens through which familiar aspects of human life can be viewed differently.

As the book puts it, “This is not a nature book. It is not a leadership book. It is a book about seeing.”

Four Decades of Hospitality Behind the Stories

Mathew’s perspective is shaped by more than four decades in the hospitality industry across India, Zambia and Sri Lanka. His professional journey includes 33 years with the Taj Group, giving him extensive experience of people, organisations and the realities of working life.

He currently serves as Senior Vice President – Operations at Tamara Leisure Experiences in Bengaluru.

That professional background gives the essays an interesting foundation. The book moves across four thematic movements—The Forest, The Organisation, The Shore and The Opening—gradually connecting observations of the natural world with questions surrounding workplaces, leadership and life.

Speaking about the book, Mathew explained that the writing process began unexpectedly.

“I did not set out to write a book about leadership, and I did not set out to write a book about nature. I set out, as always, with a camera. The photographs came first, and what they showed was not always what I had seen. That is where the essays began.”

A Thoughtful Conversation at the Launch

The Bengaluru launch also featured an in-conversation session between Mathew and Ian Faria, Mind Coach, Corporate Trainer and Leadership Consultant. Their discussion explored the experiences, observations and reflections behind the book’s 18 essays.

The gathering also heard from Mahesh Iyer, Principal & Founder of Iyer & Mahesh Architects and the creator of The Tamara Coorg and The Tamara Kodai, along with Dr. Tapas Mukherjee, former Head of the Department of English at Government College, Bori, District Durg, Chhattisgarh.

The book was formally inaugurated by S.D. Shibulal, Chairman of Tamara Leisure Experiences and Co-Founder of Infosys. The first copy was presented to Shruti Shibulal.

Manoj Mathew’s Fourth Book

The World Is Carried Within marks Mathew’s fourth book. It follows his earlier Dead Reckoning trilogy—Journey Without Maps, Where the Map Ends and Landfall.

Together, his books reflect a long-standing interest in leadership, hospitality, human behaviour and the experiences that influence professional and personal life.

His latest work adds another dimension to that journey by bringing his interest in wildlife photography into the centre of the storytelling.

Published by Quiet Compass Press, the book contains 18 essays accompanied by 18 original wildlife photographs. It is available as a standard trade paperback, alongside a limited edition of 125 signed hardcover copies.
