Populus Hotels has announced the appointment of Rob Brandenberg as the new General Manager of Populus Seattle, bringing more than two decades of experience across luxury and lifestyle hospitality to the Seattle property.
In his new role, Brandenberg will oversee daily hotel operations, team leadership and the overall guest experience. His appointment comes at an important stage for Populus Seattle as the hotel continues to build its identity around thoughtful design, sustainability and a strong connection to the Pacific Northwest.
Opened in May 2025, Populus Seattle has already attracted international attention. The property was recognized by MICHELIN with a One Key distinction and was also featured by AFAR among the world’s notable new hotels for 2026.
A Career Built Around Luxury Hospitality
Brandenberg was raised and professionally trained in Switzerland, where he developed an early foundation in pastry and French cuisine. His hospitality career later took him to luxury properties in Zurich, New York and San Francisco before expanding into the Asia-Pacific region.
His leadership experience includes serving as Director of Operations at The US GRANT, a Luxury Collection Hotel in San Diego. He also spent five years as General Manager of Pan Pacific Seattle, giving him extensive experience in the city’s competitive luxury hospitality market.
More recently, Brandenberg served as General Manager of 1 Hotel Seattle. During his tenure, he helped guide the property through a significant transformation that included renovation work, pre-opening preparations and its transition into the 1 Hotels brand.
Beyond hotel operations, Brandenberg has worked as a hospitality operations consultant, advising luxury hotels and residential properties on areas including food and beverage concepts, guest experience strategies, beverage programs, renovations and new hotel openings.
A Longstanding Connection to Seattle
Brandenberg’s professional journey has included a strong connection to Seattle, where he has been a longtime resident. His familiarity with the city’s culture, arts scene and natural environment has shaped his approach to hospitality.
His philosophy centers on creating experiences that allow guests to connect more meaningfully with the destinations they visit. This approach complements Populus Seattle’s emphasis on sustainability, local culture and place-based hospitality.
The hotel occupies the historic Westland Building, originally constructed in 1907. Through an adaptive reuse project, the building has been transformed into a contemporary hotel while preserving elements of its architectural character.
Populus Seattle Blends Design and Sustainability
Developed by Urban Villages in partnership with Aparium Hotel Group, Populus Seattle introduces the Populus brand’s regenerative hospitality concept to the Pacific Northwest.
Located in Seattle’s Pioneer Square neighborhood, the hotel features architecture by Miller Hull Partnership and interiors by Curioso. Its design incorporates more than 300 pieces of artwork created or curated to showcase Seattle’s creative community and its connection with nature.
The property features 120 guest rooms and suites alongside a collection of dining and social spaces designed for both hotel guests and the wider community.
Among them is Salt Harvest, the hotel’s signature restaurant focused on seasonal open-hearth cooking. Guests can also visit Firn, a rooftop bar, and The Café at Populus. The property additionally offers flexible spaces for meetings, gatherings and events.
A Focus on Regenerative Hospitality
Sustainability is central to Populus Seattle’s identity. The hotel is positioned as the second carbon-positive hotel in the United States, with initiatives designed to remove more carbon from the atmosphere than the property generates over its lifecycle.
Its environmental initiatives include the use of renewable electricity and tree-planting efforts through the One Night, One Tree program. The hotel also contributes a portion of its revenue toward regional environmental conservation through the Populus Seattle Stewardship Grant.
These initiatives reflect a broader shift within the hospitality industry toward experiences that consider not only guest comfort but also environmental impact and the long-term wellbeing of destinations.
Looking Ahead for Populus Seattle
With Rob Brandenberg taking the helm, Populus Seattle is entering its next chapter with an experienced hospitality leader who brings extensive luxury hotel experience and a longstanding connection to the city.
His appointment is expected to support the hotel’s continued focus on guest experience, operational excellence, sustainability and Seattle’s distinctive cultural identity. As Populus Seattle establishes its presence in Pioneer Square, the combination of adaptive-reuse architecture, local creativity and regenerative hospitality gives the property a distinctive position within Seattle’s evolving hotel landscape.
