Dubai’s affordable dining scene takes centre stage as Hospitality Hope recognises 25 independent restaurants, celebrating culinary diversity, family traditions and the people behind the city’s authentic food culture.

DUBAI, UAE | 21 October 2026: Dubai’s culinary spotlight turned towards the people and places that make great food accessible when the Hospitality Hope Icon Awards – Dubai Premiere recognised 25 restaurants for their authentic cuisine, quality, affordability and distinctive culinary identities. Dubai’s Culinary Diversity Beyond Luxury Dining

Dubai is home to communities from across the world, making its food culture one of the city’s defining characteristics. While luxury restaurants attract international attention, neighbourhood eateries and independent dining businesses offer another way to explore the city’s cultural diversity.

From traditional Iranian kebabs and Karachi-style biryani to Ethiopian specialities, Filipino family recipes, Japanese noodles and regional Indian vegetarian dishes, these restaurants offer an accessible introduction to cuisines from around the world.

Hospitality Hope was established to document this side of the dining industry, focusing on businesses whose contribution to the hospitality sector extends beyond commercial success. Many of the recognised establishments are built on family traditions, loyal local customers and recipes that have been passed down through generations.

The initiative’s emphasis on meals costing under AED 100 places affordability at the heart of its recognition, demonstrating the importance of accessible dining within a city with a diverse range of culinary experiences.

Dubai’s Leading Chefs Support Independent Restaurants

One of the defining features of the awards ceremony was the participation of established chefs and hospitality personalities who came together to present awards to the independent restaurateurs.

Among the prominent culinary figures supporting the initiative were Chef Mohammad Orfali, Chef Salam Daqqaq, Chef Himanshu Saini, Chef Reif Othman, Chef Andy Cuthbert, Chef Kyung Soo Moon and Chef Kelvin Cheung.

They were joined by hospitality professionals including Panchali Mahendra, Jeff Strachan, Olivera Saponic, Hubert Sepidnam, widely known as Mr. Taster, Sherif Tamin, Cláudia de Brito and Sunjeh Raja.

Several of these industry figures had also accompanied Singh during her research and filming journeys, helping her discover independent restaurants and meet the families behind them.

Their involvement placed the spotlight on restaurateurs whose work contributes to Dubai’s culinary identity, reinforcing the idea that recognition within hospitality can extend beyond celebrity chefs and luxury dining establishments.

Three Years of Research Behind Hospitality Hope’s Dubai Awards

The Dubai Premiere followed approximately three years of restaurant research, personal visits, filming and storytelling led by Singh. During this period, she explored and documented more than 40 family-run restaurants across the city.

Unlike conventional awards programmes that rely on paid entries or nomination fees, Hospitality Hope operates without paid submissions or commercial sponsorships. Restaurants are personally visited and assessed, often without their owners knowing they are being considered for recognition.

The initiative evaluates restaurants on factors including culinary authenticity, food quality, affordability and value for money, while placing particular emphasis on the people who sustain independent hospitality businesses.

Among those recognised were Hugo Palacio of Hugo Grill, Vaisagh Gopinathan of Little Idli, Chef Shinya Hongo of Maru Udon, Arthur Chin of Oriental Fusion, Yaqoob of Pak Liyari, Nakul Meherish of Raju Omlet, Sunny Dsouza of Uncles Kitchen, Nicky Ramchandani of Neighbourhood Food Hall, Michelle Johnson of Pitfire and Chef JP Anglo of Kooya.

For these restaurateurs, the awards offer an opportunity to introduce their work and stories to wider audiences while celebrating the contribution of independent dining to Dubai’s food culture.

Rashmi Uday Singh’s Mission to Celebrate Hospitality’s Unsung Heroes

Hospitality Hope was founded by Rashmi Uday Singh, an internationally recognised food writer, restaurant critic, television host and author of 40 books. Her career has included decades of documenting restaurants and culinary traditions, along with 17 years as a regional chairperson for The World’s 50 Best Restaurants Academy.

Reflecting on the Dubai Premiere, Singh described the research process as an exciting and demanding journey that had ultimately been deeply rewarding.

“For three years, I have been discovering and filming these remarkable restaurants, the families behind them and the stories that make them so special. To finally bring 25 of these unsung heroes into the spotlight was an overwhelming moment of joy,” Singh said.

She also highlighted the significance of seeing prominent chefs and hospitality leaders support independent restaurateurs.

“They weren’t there to receive applause. They were there to give it,” she said.

Singh established Hospitality Hope as a way of giving back to an industry that has shaped her professional life. The initiative is financed through her personal savings and supports restaurant discovery, research, professional filming, storytelling and recognition programmes.

Her wider career includes international food media, television productions, restaurant guides and culinary publications. She has also received the French government’s Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres distinction.

Hospitality Hope Expands from India to Dubai

Before its Dubai debut, Hospitality Hope had developed its awards programme across India, following an introduction in New York at the invitation of hospitality personality Will Guidara.

The initiative’s inaugural Icon Awards took place in Mumbai in May 2024, recognising 27 restaurants, including historic establishments Pancham Puriwala and Leopold Café. Subsequent editions in Delhi, Bengaluru, Goa and Ahmedabad continued its focus on independent restaurateurs and culinary heritage.

Hospitality Hope has also received international recognition, including the Global Community Spirit Award at La Liste in Paris in 2025 and recognition as a Gastronomic Gamechanger by the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards.

The Dubai Premiere represents the initiative’s first awards ceremony outside India, extending its work to a city whose dining culture encompasses both internationally acclaimed luxury restaurants and affordable neighbourhood establishments.

The organisation also operates a free global hospitality jobs portal through its website, supporting opportunities across the wider hospitality industry.

ICCA Dubai and Foodverse to Amplify the Restaurants’ Stories

The International Centre for Culinary Arts (ICCA), Dubai, hosted the inaugural international edition of the Hospitality Hope Icon Awards. The partnership connected professional culinary education with the knowledge, traditions and experience preserved by family-run restaurants.

Since 2005, ICCA Dubai has trained more than 19,000 professional chefs, supporting culinary skills development across the UAE.

Through ICCA’s Foodverse platform, Hospitality Hope will have a dedicated digital space to showcase award-winning restaurants, their stories and culinary discoveries to a wider international audience.

Sunjeh Raja, Founder and CEO of ICCA Dubai, said the partnership aligned with the institution’s commitment to the culinary community and welcomed the opportunity to support the awards’ first international edition.

The collaboration aims to increase visibility for independent restaurants and the families behind them, connecting their culinary traditions with a broader audience of food enthusiasts and hospitality professionals.

Celebrating the People Behind Dubai’s Food Culture

The Hospitality Hope Icon Awards – Dubai Premiere highlights a part of the city’s dining industry that can be overlooked amid the attention given to luxury restaurants and high-profile culinary destinations.

By recognising 25 restaurants serving meals under AED 100, the initiative celebrates the connection between affordability, culinary heritage and independent hospitality.

For the awardees, the recognition brings greater attention to the people, traditions and everyday dedication behind their businesses. For Dubai’s wider food community, it offers another perspective on what makes the city’s dining scene distinctive: a remarkable range of cuisines, accessible experiences and family-run establishments that help keep culinary traditions alive.
